The Fall of the Samurai expansion brings it in-line with other gunpowder-era Total War games. Shogun 2 is the sequel to the first game but features new content in the Fall of the Samurai expansion. If you only want to play one Total War game to see whether or not you like the series, make it Total War: Shogun 2.

I was considering making a video about helping people play the mod but I don't know if I'll ever get around to it considering I have no video making skills. Pavise crossbows almost always pay for themselves. Everything has enough armor that it is objectively the best choice. Put your archers/crossbows on heavy shot. Note that a lot of polearm units are actually just melee infantry and should be treated as such. Make sure your melee infantry are in shield wall or wedge when they hit the enemy but try to keep them out of formation for moving purposes. Try to make it happen close enough to your troops that you can support the engagement with your spears or polearm unitsįormations are really strong, particularly for infantry engagements. Usually a fight breaks out between opposing shock cav on one or both flanks and you will want to avoid having it be close to the enemy line. Don't be tempted to take melee cav, as it is inferior in 95% of cases. Most games, the host will limit the number of cav because of this. Heavy shock cav trades favorably with all units except perhaps pavise spearmen, halberdiers/pikes hit from the front and other better shock cav.

Free Company brand of units (Footmen, mounted, longbowmen) and Ecorcheur units are all good deals for their price and a lot of factions have access to them.

Bringing the right army comp is 75% of the battle and it's easy to get screwed because you thought you were getting the best unit by paying the most money. France is the best place to start, with wide access to strong units. These factions all have good rosters and can handle just about any scenario, whether it is siege or land battle. Strong but not OP factions to start out with: France, Burgundy, Toulouse, Castile, HRE, Aragon. Anyone who uses it is a cheeseburger and should be given the appropriate amount of flak until they change. Kingdom of Jerusalem is incredibly overpowered and you should not use it outside of specifically okayed scenarios.

Ask your teammates for army critiques and look at what other players bring. Being cool will get you invited back, and getting invited back will give you experience, which will make you better.
